MLS in Brazil...

Time and time again our faculty & staff show us what incredible examples they are to our students. Tara Ciccione, our Physical Education, Health, and ASL teacher at MLS is off to Brazil to participate in an incredible project with Habitat for Humanity. The project focuses on bringing clean water to families that don't currently have easy access to it.

MLS Teacher lends a helping hand...

Brazil has between 6 and 8 million fewer houses than it needs, and people earning less than $1,000 per month account for about 90% of the deficit. In the cities, there is overcrowding and housing deterioration. It is estimated that about 26 million Brazilians live in urban areas which lack access to drinking water, 14 million do not have trash collection services, and 83 million are not connected to sewage systems. The rural areas in the northeast region are currently suffering from the worst drought they have seen in the last 50 years. Women and children are forced to walk long distances to fetch water for their homes, often from sources where water is untreated.

Today's update from Tara in Brazil...

"We are on day 2 and still building the cistern for our family. Our 14 members broke up into teams to work with our given families. Here’s a photo of two members of the Habitat for Humanity team and one of my team members. I want to thank the staff, students, MLS community... and anyone who has donated to help this project. This has been such an amazing experience so far."

We are so proud to have Tara on our team at MLS...keep up the good work! We can't wait to hear from you again.
