Passing of MLS Founder

Rev. Herbert Geisler, Sr.

On Wednesday, September 19, the Reverend Herbert Geisler, Sr., of Lake Forest, peacefully went to be with the Lord. He was 101 years old. We thank God for his many years of faithful service as teacher, pastor, veteran, husband, and father. He was preceded into glory by his wife, Gladys, in 2014.

Reverend Geisler was a graduate of Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, IL ('51) and Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, IL ('73) as well as Teachers College, Columbia University (MA religious studies), and Queens College, City University of New York (Professional Diploma in educational administration).

He served as principal of St. Matthew Lutheran School, Manhattan, New York, and was first administrator of Our Saviour Lutheran and Martin Luther High Schools, New York, before attending seminary, and then served as pastor at Zion Lutheran Church, Schulenburg, TX. After retirement he served as supply preacher and vacancy pastor in 50 congregations of southeast Michigan, northwest Ohio, and Windsor, Ontario. After moving to Lake Forest, California at age 90, he his wife led Bible classes at Peace Lutheran Church, Tustin, and in their community in Forest Gardens. In their last years Reverend Geisler and Gladys were members of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Irvine.

Please remember his son, Dr. Herbert Geisler, Jr., (professor emeritus of music, Concordia University Irvine) and daughter-in-law, Kiu Geisler (library staff, CUI), in your prayers.

Plans are underway for a service of thanksgiving for the bountiful mercies of God in the life of Rev. Geisler and all believers and the promise of the Resurrection in Christ. As a veteran of the Army Air Force in World War II, he will be interred along with his wife Gladys (Navy) in the National Cemetery in Riverside at a date to be determined.
