Dear Parent/Guardians,

 

We are pleased to enclose your child’s report card for the first quarter of the school year at Martin Luther School. We encourage you to go over this report carefully with your child to get an accounting of the work and effort that they are putting forth. This is your copy – it need not be returned to the school. It can also be viewed on Blackbaud.

 

Passing grades are 100% through 70%. Performance below a 70% is failing.

 

Some courses use the following special grades:
 
I= Incomplete;P= Pass;F= Fail;M= Medical Excuse;X= Exempt

 

The student average is weighted by the credit value of the courses. Full credit classes such as English, History or Science have full weight and influence the grade average more than half credit classes. Half credit classes include Physical Education, Theology, Health, and Art. Pass/Fail courses such as Academic Lab, Instructional ESL, and Instructional Literature do not influence the grade average.

 

Questions concerning grades or comments should be directed to the subject teacher. A student’s cumulative GPA changes only at the end of each semester.
 
  • PARENT/STUDENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES– You will have opportunities for an individual parent-student-teacher conference onTuesday, November 20from1:30 PM – 4 PMand6 to 8 PM. The students will be dismissed at12:33 PM on that day.We encourage your student to come with you.To ensure your student’s success, it’s important to have both the parent and the student involved in the entire process!

  • Thursday, November 15 @ 7:50AM HIGH HONOR ROLL BREAKFAST– Students on the High Honor Roll for the first quarter will be invited to a breakfast, where they will be recognized for their achievements. Parents are encouraged to join their students – you are a big part of their success! Invitations will be distributed the week of November 5th.
 
  • Saturday, November 17 @ 8:30AM – ADMISSIONS/SCHOLARSHIP TEST–For Fall ’19 admissions. An alternate date for the test will be on Saturday, December 8th at 8:30 AM.Please share this information with friends and neighbors! Our 8th Grade students will be taking the test in school on Friday, November 16.
 
  • Tuesday, November 20— EARLY DISMISSAL & THANKSGIVING RECESS– The school and offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 21, Thursday, November 22, and Friday, November 23.
 
  • Friday, November 30 - Sunday, December 2 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT– The Martin Luther Invitational Basketball Tournament will be held in just a few weeks! Come and cheer our teams on to victory. Please refer to the website for further information.
 
  • ­Tuesday, December 4 @ 7 PM - Cocoa, Cookies and Chemistry-The Martin Luther Science Department presents an evening of making a craft, eating cookies, drinking hot cocoa and a Chemistry show. The event is geared for students in grades 3 to 8 and the admission cost is $5. Please register in advance as space is limited by contacting the school at 718-894-4000 x126 or e-mailing Mr. Fredericksen, Science Dept. Chair at gfredericksen@martinluthernyc.org.
 
  • Sunday, December 9Holiday Fair hosted by Cougar Parents 9am – 5pm. Many different vendors will be present.
 
  • Thursday, December 13- CHRISTMAS COLLECTION– The holidays will soon be upon us. It has been our tradition to take up a collection for the teachers at Christmas time. If you would like to participate in this, please complete the enclosed sheet and return it to the Main Office before December 13.
 
  • Friday, December 14 @ 6PM– Cougar Parent Meeting (prior to Christmas Concert)
 
  • Friday, December 14 @ 7PM- CHRISTMAS CONCERT– Martin Luther School’s Middle and High School students will host their annual Christmas Concert.We invite you to come out and support our wonderful musicians and vocalists.

ADDITIONAL NOTES & REMINDERS
 
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIME– Students may enter building at 7:15 AM and upon dismissal all students should leave the school premise unless involved in a supervised activity.
 
ATTENDANCE AND LATENESS– Parents, please note our Attendance and Lateness Policies. A reminder in regard to absences – a note must be sent in with the student upon his/her return to school.

 

BOX TOPS– Please support Box Tops 4 Education. They are found on hundreds of products. Clip them and send them in with your child. Each one collected is worth 10 cents for MLS.

 

CELL PHONES– Cell phones aren’t permitted to be used at anytime during school hours.
 
CHAPEL OFFERINGS–Here at Martin Luther School, we believe that a part of Christian education is to learn to share our goods and ourselves with a variety of Christian and charitable causes. The chapel offerings will be used to support various Hurricane Relief Organizations for the areas hardest hit by the multiple storms.

 

COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENT REMINDER– Students in all grades must have at least half of their service hours completed by end of First Semester. The YEARLY service hour requirements are as follows: Grades 6-8 = 5 hours per year; NJHS is an additional 10 hours; Grades 9-12 = 8 hours per year; NHS is an additional 15 hours. Grant-In-Aid recipients are required to complete an additional 24 hours, annually.Grant – in – Aid, NJHS/NHS must do service in school. The students have been informed of the hours that they owe and we are also enclosing a slip with all the information. 
 
DRESS CODE– All students must be in coordinates and correct footwear – no substitutes allowed. The explanation of the proper dress code had been sent out with the earlier interim letter. Failure to comply will result in a violation and detention.

 

BLACKBAUD- Blackbaud is our communication and learning management system for students, parents, guardians, teachers and the school. If you have not activated your account yet, enclosed is information containing your user name and how to set up your account. When your account is set-up, please update your e-mails and phone numbers on your profile so we may be in better contact and communication with you. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Fredericksen at gfredericksen@martinluthernyc.orgor at 718-894-4000 x126.

 

PESTICIDESPlease be advised that Martin Luther School, as part of its regular pest control that occurs on the 2nd and 4th Thursday after school hours each month, uses the following insecticides during the course of the year: difethialone, pyrethrins, piperonyl butoxide, cyfluthrin, fipronil, hydramethylnon, esfenvalerate, and 2-(1-methylethoxy) phenol methylcarbarnate. Pest control is provided by a NYS licensed exterminator. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Fredericksen.
 
ID TAGS– Are required to be worn upon entry to building and throughout the day. Students not wearing their ID tags will serve detention.
 
SCHOOL CLOSING– The school policy for emergency school closing is as follows: (1) If New York City public schools close, Martin Luther also closes for that day. (2) If city public schools remain open but Martin Luther closes, the information will be posted in Blackbaud and on the school’s answering machine. The closing will also be announced on all major media outlets.

 

TUITIONPlease stay current with your Smart Tuition Account. You must be up to date with your tuition to receive the 1st Semester end report card. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Deck in the Finance office.
 
WALK-A-THON– More than 210 students, staff and parents walked in support of our 2018 Walk-A-Thon and nearly $7500 was pledged! Monies raised will go toward various club activities and class events for the Middle and High School students. If you have not turned in your money, please do so immediately. Those still in arrears have been sent a letter. Please remit payment. Thanks to all who supported this effort!
